Why clean upholstery at home
In a New York apartment the sofa often doubles as dining spot, home office and guest bed. Body oils darken armrests and headrest areas, dust and city grime settle into the fabric, and pets and kids add their own marks. Vacuuming helps, but it does not remove the soil worked into the fibers.
Getting a sectional out of a fourth-floor walk-up or a tight prewar hallway is rarely practical, which is why we clean upholstery where it sits. We bring our own supplies and equipment and protect the surrounding floor while we work.
Regular cleaning keeps upholstery looking better for longer, because soil that sits in fabric wears the fibers down. Households with pets, kids or a sofa in daily use often schedule it once or twice a year, and many people book it together with a deep cleaning or before moving into a new apartment.
Fabric codes and what can be cleaned
Most upholstered furniture has a tag with a cleaning code. W means water-based cleaning is suitable, S means solvent-based cleaning only, W/S allows either, and X means vacuum only. We check the code and test an inconspicuous spot before cleaning. If there is no tag, tell us the brand or fabric type if you know it.
Natural fibers like linen, cotton and silk, velvet, and vintage pieces need extra care and can react to moisture with shrinkage, water marks or color bleeding. Leather is a different material from fabric and needs its own treatment. If we think a piece is not safe to clean, we will tell you rather than risk it.
Stains, drying and aftercare
Many everyday stains lift well, but some, such as old set-in stains, ink, dye transfer, bleach marks and sun fading, may only lighten or cannot be removed. Tell us what caused a stain and how long it has been there; it helps us choose the right approach. We will be honest about likely results before we start.
Drying time depends on the fabric, the method and how much air moves through the room. Open a window or run a fan or air conditioner to speed it up, and keep pets and kids off the furniture until it is dry. Upholstery cleaning pairs well with a deep cleaning if you want the whole room refreshed at once.
